Greetings Dear Readers,

I did a frightening open mic with Charlie Hustle last night, we did three of his songs (one of which was obviously inspired by his recent breakup with Caitlin, entitled Pink Crutch) but its good practice in engaging an especially judgmental audience. My pulled pork turned out OK, too much garlic in the egg salad.

I have my 'med passer' test today, which will be followed by a training with a nurse from admin, named Jill, whose company I enjoy, so thats good.

went to the dentist, I have an infected tooth and need a root canal.

no gigs setup for anytime soon, going to practice lots of new stuff before next outing.

Nuxiemade is having a sale! Yes, Nuxie is my wife. She makes great hats, skirts and whatnot mostly for young girls, but they are all made by hand with care and conscience. She has her own site ( and also sells on etsy.

If you want to please me, don't make my tea, SERVE UP THE MAIN COURSE! )

JP has graduated. We were kind of biting our nails that he might need summer shcool for a while there. Anyhoo, Mertz Manor crammed to the gills with house guests. Epic dinner Friday was Roast leg of Lamb, salmon, stuft grape leaves (dolmas) roast potatoes, greek salad. Last night after the commencement ceremony, the fam went to PF Chang's, I know neither local nor terribly fresh but they have good gluten free options (JP has celiac's disease) and we were able to reserve a table for twelve at 9 pm on a Friday.

My allergies have been intense, everyone's have: neezing everywhere you go, people wearing dust masks... my eyes watering 24/7, waking up at night all stuffed up. Claritin, Zaditor, Nalacrom and albuterol and still I'm a snotty, drippy mess.

I've been fooolwing posts from Team Portland on the ALC (AIDS/Lifecycle) ride. I'm going to sign up for the ride in 2014!

also this: JP will be graduating this coming week. JP was good about going to Santina's ballet peformace yesterday with the family, inlcuding my (paternal) Dad, who drove down from Portland for the ballet... JP's pretty active on soundcloud, when he should be probably working on illustrating a book, 'Strong Jay'- but this is what he's been up to: ♠JUNES♠.

Nuxie's guppies had babies! We rounded up as many as we could and put in an isolation 'nursery' that separates the babies (fry) from adult fish, because the fry get eaten... by everybody. The frogs eat 'em, mommies and daddies eat 'em, even the neon tetras got a piece of the action, by eating the babies. On a less joyous note, while cleaning Nuxie's tank, I noticed tiny white worms (planaria) which are not harmful (but totally disgusting imho) so I vacuumed the substrate (gravel) and we did a 35% water change, the results have been good. Next thing is to stop feeding the fish (except the babies!) for a few days and be more careful about overfeeding... I tell ya, its the darn frogs! You want to make sure they're getting food after all, but I guess they can probably go a few days wihtout food, expecially after binging on babies!

Mertz Manor will be full to the brim with family visitors for the graduation next Saturday. Then, Soothesayers play at Kelly's Olympian in Portland, June 15th and Davy Jones Locker Combo plays an acoustic set June 29th at Cozmik Pizza.

went to VLV with Nux and Candy. Stayed at the Rio. Saw Reverend horton Heat, Slim Jim Phantom (stray cats), Dick Dale, Little Richard, The Rockats, and lots of other great rockabilly groups. Drank a fair amount of Sailor Jerry rum and single malt scotch. Saw a great burlesque show at The Orleans.

Davy jones' Locker Combo is kind of back, since I left Double Deuce. DJLC plays at Wandering Goat coffeehouse 4/26 with Hohumdrum. Its free, and it will be the newest lineup, no upright bass this time, it'll be Mr. Jonny Birchwood on bass, Charlie Hustle on drums, possible Justin Brandmeyer on percussion, myself on vocals guitar and harmonica, and I'm hoping we'll be joined by a sax player??!

Soothesayers have a gig 4/24 at The Tiny Tavern. The touring act features an ex-member of The Breeders.
The Soothesayers also have a gig 4/27 at Black Forest with Black Delany.

Last night Nuxie and I attended the Grand Opening of THE RABBIT HOLE )in Springfield, before going to Pat's for Kimmy's B-Day Partay. It was a costume Partay, and we didn't get the memo... snap. Soothesayers played a semi-short set without our keyboard player, Jenn. I used Pat's amp setup and got numerous compliments at first, that turned to 'Your amp sucks'. wah.

please mom don't read this, or Erik Estrada keeps IMing me )

I got 2 excellent CD's from Wally at they are cover/tribute cd's for the Television Personalities. I love TVP's. Of course Miss Nuxie discovered them, on a late night show on KCRW (santa Monica College radio) she made me driver her out to Bleeker Bob's on Melrose to buy the 12" version of 'Salvador Dali's Garden Party', next came a cassette of the LP "Privilege" followed by a long long string of vinyl seven inchers:
Split 7" with BMX Bandits on Clawfist, TVP covering BMX Bandits' YOUR CLASS
Arthur the Gardener
14th Floor
I know where Syd Barrett lives
I'm not like everybody Else
etc etc etc
TVP's have been very prolific, but also very under-rated and kind of 'secret'

dont tell anyone!

I have a wopping great post on TVPs last year when the documentary came out...
just go check out their myspace page or something...

ALSO, one of my longest running penpals, Mr. Ed, sent me a BUNCH of awesome cd's, the best are always compilations of his recent 'vinyl on 45 rpm' purchases

Soothesayers play 5/22 at Luckey's with The Underlings!

I've ridden my bike to work everyday this week, including Monday at 6 am. Theres been some rain, but it looks like we're gona get a very sunny weekend, I'm hoping to get out on the bike a little bit and start up training for ALC9 in June 2010:

I have another looongg day ahead of me tomorrow, I'm already well over my 5 hours minimum overtime at the salt mines.

We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams.
World-losers and world-forsakers,
Upon whom the pale moon gleams;
Yet we are the movers and shakers,
Of the world forever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample an empire down.

We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.

So Miss Nuxie makes these brim beanies with a crocheted flower. Here, our daughter is modeling.

After much begging and bribing, JP (aka DISHBOT), formulated a logo, like yo.

I had a dream that chachi on acid moved to Eugene to live. They tricked me into being their roadie. But of course I loved it.

before that,Saturday night after many cocktails and beers and playing with the kids and reading them stories, and watching SIX FEET UNDER and sleeping on the floor, I dreamed that I found a big wad of cash

Soothesayers are NOT playing at Black Forest on New years eve, but we ARE playing Sam Bonds Garage, this Friday, Jan 4th. I think its with the Ovulators....

This is the Soothesayers

OMGOMGOMG I turn 38 this month.....

My hair is really fuckin LLOOOOOONNGG

naughty Miss Nuxie has sold about many of her handcrafted hats and scarves in the last week of December. Yes, that cute model is my daughter! what a sweetie, huh?

Nux also takes custom orders, and can do almost anything you can think of with yarn. (wink, wink!)

Its frosty out, but clear crisp and sunny.

Mertz and Flarbie are signing up for California AIDS/Lifecycle. Riding 545 from SF to LA the first week in June. We did this ride together in 1999 and raised over $6000 between the two of us, but I haven't been on a bike in quite a while. Watch this space for info on how you can sponsor me! I need to raise at least $2500, but of course I will surpass that amount, as its a good cause.
