FLARB O VISION

Last night Nuxie and I attended the Grand Opening of
Rabbit Hole Grand Opening Saturday 6/23, with Maddie DiMarco, Coldfire, Maca Rey, DJ ___________ ?
The Rabbit Hole is a new all ages venue at 126 4th Street in Springfield. They sell handmade artisan items including clothing and ceramics. The proprietor, Roo, runs a label called Rabbit Hole Records, and manages local groups Coldfire and Instrumetal.
This show featured a talented 15 year old female singer/songwriter, Maddie O'Connell as the opening act. Her voice is very sweet and both her lyrics and guitar playing seemed pretty advanced for her age.
Coldfire is a five piece alt/rock group, described to me as a mix between Pearl Jam and John Lennon. I heard definite shades of David Byrne/Talking Heads (their opening song was a cover of 'Psycho Killer'), Blind Lemon and R.E.M. They had some minor technical delays in starting, that may have thrown them off a bit, but they quickly settled into a groove that showed they were having some fun, they cut loose with a goofy cover of MC Hammer and played their strongest number 'Not the Same' in their set, which lasted about 30 minutes. You can find Coldfire on Myspace or Reverbnation.com.
I had another event to attend, so I missed Maca Rey, a world music group, and the DJ.
The Rabbit Hole has a glass storefront appearance, and strives to be a family friendly gig spot, indie/local CD & merch outlet. The spot is nestled between Jim's Landing and The Brickhouse (a dive bar and an 'exotic dancer' bar), but its within shouting distance of 2 churches and the Springfield Police Station.
My fear was that this was a front for a 'Youth Ministry' but nary a trace of Jesus was to be found anywhere, thank God? If there was any religious affiliation, it was kept out of all conversations, between the mostly 30-something parents enjoying Stumptown Coffee (mmm!), Martinelli's sparkling cider and assorted hors d'oeuvres.
There is a melting point for kids under the age of 6. Right about 10 pm, no amount of sugar will override the 'third and final orbiting phase' of young human beings with a regular sleep pattern. Their mini-mosh pit was entertaining, though.
Roo said that he won't be booking high decibel metal or punk groups, and that narrows the bandwidth quite a bit. There are too few all ages venues, but most of them are ready to allow some limited moshing or drums loud enough to compete with a Marshall Stack. Coldfire played at stereo volume, and the drummer used a plexiglass baffle to muffle the sound. It was intimate, but not intense.
I pray that the Rabbit Hole can become a sacred holy sanctuary for rockers of all ages, where band members can bring their kids and families without need for earplugs. Mostly, I wish them success in trailblazing a unique niche that is generally underserved. More info: http://www.rabbitholerecords.org/
Coldfire will be appearing at Astoria Bar November 9th with Audiophile and The Average Life, and at Hawthorne Theater November 14th with The Average life.
An interview I did with Roo appears on The Rockshop Podcast (http://ideopod.com/therockshop.html)
