carving at Sheumack broom shop

I'm terrible at these things, but here are some step-by-step pictures of the way that I have learned to carve faces at the broom shop.
I should have included the earliest step, which is to make two cuts with a V gauge, that will form the eyebrows, and the bottom of the nose,
so the lower cut is deeper, and hopefully leaves the bottom part of the nose flat (for now)
with a large, flat gaugeI'll cut diagonally inward to where those first two cuts were (you can see where the cuts were, right above the eyes, and below the nose!)

With a small U gauge, I put in some definition around the eyes and nose,

I put in a hairline, some worry lines, eyebrows, sometimes laugh lines just appear.

I put in some jowls, and form the mouth

then I add details with smaller gauges.

I'm still amazed at what a great job Thurman does on carvings. I definitely add my own style to these, but I still have a lot to learn!
