for further instance, the singer from Bad Brains (H.R.) intriduced himself to me as just 'Joe', but I found him again and again as more human and less of the hero I'd made him out to be.
Yeah- he has his place, for sure. I was more into Kerouac, and mostly read Tom Robbins' books back then, but I know what you mean. Tristessa is still important in its sentimental value, much like some shitty 80s bands' songs can still make me smile, even though I now recognize that their music sucks.
Sometimes it's a bummer to discover your heroes are mere humans, and sometimes it's the coolest thing in the world. I always dig finding out which one will be true for whom, when I get the chance.
