I interviewed Blake Shchwarzenbach in '93 or '94 at the Velvet Elvis in Fullerton, CA.
Most of my questions were about remaining an 'Indie' band in the face of big signings like Green Day, Nirvana etc. There had been a huge article in Maximum Rock & Roll about Indie scam labels, and how the 'rock star dream' was a fallacy: you get a big advance fronted, but have to repay it, often with interest, and many bands were getting shafted.
So Blake talked about the Magic of FUGAZI/Dischord, and how they made more money staying indie, and were keeping it real.

then they signed to geffen, put out a TERRIBLE record, AWFUL videos, and flopped.

Is there a lesson here? Not really. I don't call it selling out, I prefer to think of it as 'buying in'

still and all, they were heroic to me for a number of reasons.

a trio from Los Angeles, they ALL moved east and attended NYU together more or less, before settling in the SF bay area, where they all lived in different towns, and criss crossed Berkeley, El Sobrante and San Francisco .

Blake was in the group JETS TO BRAZIL with the dude from TEXAS IS THE REASON, JTB put out a pretty darn good record called Orange Rhyming Dictionary and toured for a year or 2.

PUDDLETOWN PADDYS will be playing a few JB covers at the JAWBREAKER tribute night at Wandering Goat in Eugene, OR on October 10th.

Soothesayers played last night at Tiny's to a very enthusiastic (inebriated?) audience. Mex Pistols were awesome, Campfire Punks were awesome. i didn't know Jason from CFP was the Jason from Toad in the Hole, but I offered to play harmonica for CFP, as they kick much ass.

FUCK YOU
