wanksgiving

ahoy, scurvy!

I flew down to L.A. Tuesday. I'd waited too long to purchase tickets, and the price was very high (sigh)

my mom and stepdad are very traditional about thanksgiving.

.... more like

WANKSGIVING

i find that there is always a certain amount of waste involved, I feel like turkey is not the tastiest meat but they roast a big bird
and make tons of sides, some of which barely get eaten during the meal. Jell-O with fruit in it? yes. that happened.
Arnie went absolutely crazy nuts bonkers at canter's (famous jewish bakery in L.A./Fairfax area. )
He bought potato knishes. (Sic?) they are SO. DAMN. GOOD.
we had most of the Canter's items on Tuesday night, shortly after I arrived. My brother Tim was visiting , and my Uncle Neal was there.
I probably would not have made the trip, except that Uncle Neal had recently lost his wife, my Aunt Jackie. I was at their wedding. My 2 brothers and I carried aunt Jackie on a chair, I ciaught the garter, and put it on a lady's leg, according to the band's instructions. I had never known about this tradition before that day, The groom tosses a garter, and the bride throws a bouquet.
(did you vomit a little when you heard that?)

anyhooo
There really was some excellent food. .... and jell-o.
and it was cool hanging out with my Uncle Neal after his terrible loss.

the pie was excellent.
Aunt Carol ordered an apple pie from her  favorite bakery in New York
my sister brought a strawberry/hibiscus pie, baked by Homeboy Industries
there was turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with (burnt) marshmallow on top, salad, rolls, 3 types of cranberry sauce, plenty of wine and cocktails, and of course, the obligatory green bean casserole with crunchy durkee onions on top.  This one is always made with campbell's cream of mushroom soup, and the durkee onions.

I slept on my mom's couch for four nights, the first night, I shut a few of the windows, and was still a bit chilly, like an airplane interior, or a hospital.  Then I found other windows I hadn't shut, and slept better after that.
not awful, but a bit colder than I'd like, on a couch, with few blankets.
It was OK, but I'm glad to be back to my rented room in Oakridge.
and my cat.

I took a funderful Bike ride friday, straight up the strand from redondo beach to venice
I purposely left my phone behind on this excursion.

the view was extraordinary, I never remember seeing the sky so clear there, being able to see all the way to mailbu, and seeing catalina island so clearly in the daytime.  visibility was truly amazing.

I bought a t-shirt and CD from Harry Perry, the roller-blading street-rocker from another planet
I told him I still have a cassette of his first recording as Harry Perry and the Karma Kozmic Krusaders.
He has opened for Jane's Addiction, and been featured on a Toyota commercial with his trademark target guitar

After my bike ride, I had a little soak in Arnie's jacuzzi, but it was more like a Tepid Tub.... it leaks frequently.

I got Uncle Neal to watch an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with me.  It was an episode that featured the cast of Seinfeld.

I've been binge-watching Bob's Burgers. I've always been a fan of animated comedies and Jon Benjamin and Kristen Schaal are super duper genius, they have great guests like Sarah Silverman and their Thanksgiving episodes are pretty great.

Redondo Beach Pier has lost its precious Fun Factory.  At least the Hot Dog on a Stick is still there.

I didn't go record shopping while I was in L.A.
